Boosters Scholarships

The SPHS Tiger Booster Club awards five $1000 scholarships annually to graduating seniors. The recipients are selected by SPHS committees who consider candidate nominations made by coaches, teachers, the activities director and the athletic director.

The first two awards, the Flossie Clarich Award and the Lew Clement Award together stand as symbols of Tiger Athletic pride and citiizenship.
The Rick Booth Memorial Scholarship celebrates outstanding athletic success and a relentless drive that elevates the entire South Pasadena sports community.
Two Tiger Seal Awards are given to honor achievement in activities and other school involvement.

Flossie Clarich Award

The Flossie Clarich Award honors a dedicated community leader and sports advocate who shaped local youth athletics, notably serving as vice president for regional youth baseball leagues in the 1970s. Her lasting impact earned her the distinction of having Clarich Field in Arroyo Park named in her honor. Established by the Booster Club, this award reflects Clarich’s deep belief that sports build character, teamwork, and personal responsibility.

This award honors a student-athlete who exemplifies what it means to be a consummate team player. Instead of focusing solely on the top scorer or MVP, the committee selects athletes whose unselfishness, dedication, and leadership and exceptional service inspire their teammates and lifts up the community.

Lee Clement Award

Lee Clement was a highly respected community figure, and dedicated supporter of South Pasadena youth programs and sports. Throughout his time as a coach and mentor he championed the quiet virtues of selflessness and humility, maintaining that a team’s success is built on the individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes, lifting their teammates during adversity, and celebrating the collective team triumphs above their own. This award honors his belief that high school athletics are fundamentally a tool for building character, personal responsibility, and sportsmanship.

The recipients of this award are student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional balance of three pillars: athletic dedication, strong academic standing, and active service to the school or South Pasadena community, truly reflecting Clement’s legacy of character and teamwork.

Rick Booth Award

Linebacker Rick Booth, a standout member of the SPHS Class of 1970, was the anchor of the legendary 1969 undefeated varsity football team that captured the CIF Championship. Known for an explosive, high-octane style of play that earned him the nickname “Ricky Ticky Time Bomb”, Booth’s dominant senior season culminated in his selection as the AAA CIF Player of the Year. He took his elite talents to Menlo College and then to the Pac-10 at UC Berkeley. His place in Southern California football history was permanently secured when he was named to the regional All-Century Team as one of the greatest linebackers of the past 100 years. Beyond his own accolades, Booth spent his later years coaching and mentoring the next generation, leaving a legacy defined by true sportsmanship, fierce dedication, and a lifelong commitment to encouraging others.

This award is given annually to a graduating senior athlete who transcends their sport and serves as an inspiration to SPHS and the local community. The recipients of this award have achieved the highest level of athletic success, embodying the same explosive passion, fierce dedication, and commanding leadership that Booth famously brought to the gridiron.

Tiger Seal Awards

The Tiger Seal Awards are presented to one female and one male student who demonstrate the core values of the Tiger Seal: leadership, fair play, strength and scholarship. This honor recognizes exceptional achievement outside of athletics, celebrating outstanding dedication to school involvement, drama, the arts, and music.
