Boosters Scholarships

The SPHS Tiger Booster Club awards five $1000 scholarships every school year to graduating seniors. The recipients are selected by SPHS committees who consider candidate nominations made by coaches, teachers, the activities director and the athletic director.

The first two awards, the Flossie Clarich Award and the Lew Clement Award together stand as symbols of Tiger Athletic pride and citiizenship.
The Rick Booth Award recognizes outstanding athletic success.
Two Tiger Seal Awards honor achievement in activities and other school involvement.

Flossie Clarich Award

Flossie Clarich was a dedicated community leader, sports advocate, and long-standing figure in local youth athletics, including serving as vice president for regional youth baseball leagues during the 1970’s. Her impact on local recreation was significant enough that Clarich Field in Arroyo Park was named in her honor. The Booster Club established this award to reflect Clarich’s belief that sports build strong character, team cohesion, and personal responsibility.

The award is given to a student-athlete who is consummate team player, demonstrating unselfishness and leadership to inspire their teammates. Rather than going strictly to the top scorer or MVP, the selection committee looks for athletes who exhibit strong leadership, athletic dedication, and exceptional service to their team or community.

Lee Clement Award

Lee Clement was a highly respected community figure and dedicated supporter of South Pasadena youth programs and sports. This award honors his belief that high school athletics are fundamentally a tool for building good citizens, personal responsibility, and sportsmanship.

The recipients of this award are student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional balance of three pillars: athletic dedication, strong academic standing, and active service to the school or South Pasadena community, truly reflecting Clement’s legacy of character and teamwork.

Rick Booth Award

A member of the SPHS Class of 1970, Rick Booth helped to lead the Tigers to an undefeated season and a state championship, and was named AAA CIF Player of the Year in his senior year. He went on to play college football at Menlo College and for Cal Berkeley’s Pac-10 and was later named to a Souther Californnia newspaper;s All-Century Team as a standout linebacker. In his later years, Booth coached and mentored young athletes in multiple sports. He is remembered for his sportsmanship, dedication, and encouragement of others both on and off the field.

This award is given to a student-athlete who transcends their sport and is an inspiration to SPHS and the community. The recipients of this award have achieved the highest level of athletic success.

Tiger Seal Awards (2)

One female and one male student are recognized for demonstrating the character traits of the Tiger Seal – leadership, fairplay, strength and scholarship – in areas other than athletics such as school involvement, drama, arts, music, etc.
